Why do we judge ourselves and others? Because we get trapped in comparisons. Unfairly, even harshly we compare ourselves to others, often based on appearances. Someone is better-looking, more intelligent, talented, rich and/or popular.

These common comparisons cloud the depth of our being. They are surface judgments that can cause deep and destructive emotions such as anger, jealousy and even hatred. They lead to minefields filled with feelings of insecurity and superiority.

Such feelings can lead to physical, emotional and mental health issues. So much so, that it is important to be aware of these feelings that can cause pain, illness, depression, confusion and anxiety.

Free yourself from harmful judgements.

In the tradition of the Buddhist teachings, whenever a difficult feeling arises in you such as fear, anger or jealousy, don’t run from it. Instead, embrace it tenderly. Let go of any self-judgment. This is practicing compassion for yourself.

In doing this a sense of calm will fill you that will give you clarity and insight as to why you judge yourself and others. You’ll be able to see how unfair and damaging it is. Then you can consciously choose to see yourself and others in a new and beautiful light that goes deeper – beyond mere appearances.

Rise above the drama of the world.

The lotus in Buddhist symbolism represents purity of the mind, body, speech and actions. It represents enlightenment. The western world might call it awareness. It is only through greater enlightenment and awareness that we can heal the world problems that are facing us.

This is accomplished by each person who has the courage to look within in order to weed out any harmful elements. Yet, if they’re wise, they’ll do it with self-compassion, for they know that even the lotus has to travel through the mud in order to blossom.
